Hunker Down for Earl

A Lovely Beach!

Minutes before Earl...

Tropical islands are more than just places to order fruity drinks with little umbrellas – they’re also incredibly attractive places to set up online casinos. The taxes are light, and the laws restricting gambling don’t apply. Plus, you know, fruity drinks.

Unfortunately, islands come with their own baggage – monster hurricanes. You win some, you lose some.

This week, Hurricane Earl will be nearing a Category 3 as it travels through Antigua, a major online gambling hub. The country is home to many of the world’s biggest online gambling operators, including BoDog.com and Intertops.

Hurricane Earl is one of the biggest storms to take over the island in recent years, so online casino operators are bracing themselves for anything the storm might bring, which could include damaged servers and downtime for their websites.

Hurricane Earl is not expected to go directly through Antigua, although winds will reach up to 100 mph and more than 8 inches of rain will fall. Operators continue to have their fingers crossed, hoping that the storm will not cause damage that cannot be repaired. Keep your hopes up, but be cautious when using affected casinos until the storm passes – don’t want to hit the jackpot only to have the website go down!

Meanwhile, in South Africa…

Bad news from Johannesburg, where the Gauteng Gambling Board has said it is illegal to gamble online. This followed a North Gauteng High Court judgment on the jurisdiction of online gambling transactions in the country which was handed down on August 20.

Not only would internet operators who offer online gambling to South African residents for gain and a player or punter who takes part in online gambling would both be guilty of breaking the law, ruling also makes internet service providers accountable for the services as well as financial transaction providers such as banks. Anyone who advertises or facilitates the advertisement of online gambling – including radio and television stations, print media and outdoor advertising agencies – will also face the law.

Anyone prosecuted and found guilty of breach or contravention of the gambling legislation could receive a fine of R10m or 10 years in jail, or both.

Tough break, South Africans!

Live Online Casino Opened!

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Playing online is a fantastic pastime, but it doesn’t exactly measure up to the experience of being in a real casino. Online casino operators have tried for over a decade to find new ways to recreate the land-based gambling experience. Live dealers and 3D casinos are all great innovations but wouldn’t it be great to be able to play with people from the casino from the comfort of your home? The Palace Casino in Great Yarmouth has finally made it possible, with its brand new live casino games.
The first of its kind in the online gambling world, players are given the unique opportunity to ‘sit’ at the same table as players who are actually in the Palace Casino. Acting with Hermes-Softlab, The Palace Casino has been able to create live-streaming software that displays land-based gambling activities accurately, as if you were right there playing in the casino. A project like this takes a great deal of work and dedication, and the online casino operator has certainly displayed its commitment to providing the online gambling world with innovative new products.

The ribbon was cut yesterday, August 17, 2010, and people from all over the country lined up to get a taste of the brand new live gambling system.

Lady Luck Smiles: Online Casino Player Collects $990,529.74 Progressive Jackpot

Monday, August 16th, 2010

I love these stories, don’t you? Lucky lady Catherine M. of California hit the Progressive Jackpot at Go Casino and won close to a million dollars. She was playing the Red, White and Win progressive slots and hit the Progressive Jackpot of $990,529.74 with only a $7.50 bet.

“I have been playing at Go Casino for years now”, says Catherine. “I couldn’t believe I hit the jackpot, I have never won anything like this in my life!” So what is Catherine going to do with her winnings? Personally, I’d go for a fabulous vacation, a copy of Action Comics 15…but Catherine has a better plan: “I am now going to buy a house for my mother and me to live in.” Cheers to her!

“This is not the first progressive win at Go Casino” said Danny Michaels, Promotional Manager at the gaming outfit. “But this is certainly the biggest one in our history. Our Progressive Jackpots were over 2 million dollars before Catherine’s hit, so there’s still over a million dollars of Progressive Jackpots to be won.”

Go Casino made a huge impact on the internet gambling scene when they became the first to offer a multi-deposit welcome bonus of up to $20,000. They provide more than 150 casino games, more than 10 varieties of video poker or several kinds of progressive slots.

Online Gamblers Check Their Crystal Balls for Robbie

Friday, August 13th, 2010

Maybe cards and dice aren’t your thing – maybe you’d rather take a chance on something more…long-term. Well, whether that’s the case, or you just want to gently introduce your star-stalking significant other to the thrill of gambling, you’re in luck. Bookmakers William Hill has launched a range of odds on the performer Robbie Williams’ next 12 months, following his marriage to Ayda Field on the weekend.

If the mood strikes you, you can bet on the singer becoming a dad by August 2011 (2/1 odds), wager that Robbie’s band will have a #1 album next Christmas (3/1 odds) or aim for a long-term payoff by betting that his potential offspring will have a #1 hit by the time they hit 21 (25/1 odds).

While betting on celebrities personal lives may seem a little…low-brow, it’s certainly not a new phenomenon. Several sites around the web offer celebrity stock market games, and betting on the outcome of celebrity relationships is always fodder for the tabloids. So buff up on your celebrity knowledge (or pry some tidbits out of your significant other), and head over to William Hill.

Robbie recently rejoined the rest of Take That following a 15-year separation and successful solo career.

Ontario, Canada Looks at Online Gambling

Friday, August 13th, 2010

Online Gambling may be getting a chance in Ontario, following British Columbia, the United States, and several other jurisdictions. While there’s no indication of how soon these lucky Canadians will be able to gamble from their PCs, their government is starting to favour the idea.

They have reason to; it’s estimated that online gambling is expanding at 20 per cent annually. With Ontario battling a $19.7-billion deficit this year as the Liberal government approaches a re-election fight in October 2011, regulating internet gambling, as opposed to banning it outright, is looking better and better.

The U.S., a huge market (estimated at $5.4 billion last year), is on the cusp of ending a four-year ban on Internet gambling—an industry estimated at $20 billion worldwide.

The fact is that in jurisdictions where Internet gambling is illegal, millions of people go to gaming websites domiciled in other countries.

That means cash is leaving jurisdictions such as Ontario and the U.S. while governments have no control over the gambling web sites. That has prompted some advocates to argue it’s better to gain control—and scoop up more revenue—by legalizing the activity and getting a piece of the action.
