7 Tips To Limit Casino Losses

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

We all know that the house has the advantage when playing at any casino, but there are ways some things you can do to reduce the advantages that they have. Here are some things you can think about when playing online next time that will help you limit the amount of money you can lose in a single session.

1) Set a Daily Deposit Limit – You might be surprised to know that the casino gamblers that lose the most money aren’t the ones that deposit huge amounts of money in one go. In fact, many of the biggest losers in casinos are the players that make many small deposits over time. The issue is when players lose their first deposit, their emotions come into play and they start chasing that money by doing things that they normally would not do. Many of the best casinos allow you to set a limit on your daily deposits which means that if you do not make money on the first deposit then you will not be able to continue to deposit. This will allow you a cool off time where you can come back focussed the next day with a much more clear mind. If your casino of choice does not have this option you could look for a deposit option where you can limit this kind of activity.

2) Set a Time Limit – One of the casinos’ greatest edges is TIME. The longer you stay and play, the more likely you are to lose everything. If you set a timer at the beginning of your session and tell yourself you will not play past it, you can help control your betting activity better. One of the reasons for this is the longer you play, the more tired and impatient you might get which could cause your betting patterns to change. It is better to play 10 very short sessions where you are most focussed and mentally ready than 1 very long one where you could lose focus and have much more erratic play.

3) Set a Win Goal – If you don’t set a realistic goal of how much money you want to win then chances are you never will win. Everytime you start a gambling session you should tell yourself at what point you will stop playing and cash out. You can always re-evaluate your goal when you reach it, but if you do you should at least cash out your original deposit and some to ensure that it is a positive session.

4) Set a Stop/Loss – Similar to setting a win goal, you need to go into every gambling session knowing exactly how much money you are willing to lose. This is one of the toughest parts about gambling, but you need great self discipline to hold yourself to your stop loss and walk away from the tables when you hit it.

5) Keep Track of Your Play – Every gambler should keep tabs on all their gambling activity. This will allow you to keep a running tally of whether or not you are in the positive or the negative (and by how much). Many gamblers don’t realize how much money they are actually using because they just keep depositing/withdrawing more from the ATM. Keeping these numbers in front of your mind might make you hesitate from making that extra withdrawal.

6) Play in a Positive Mind State – Playing in a sad or depressed state is one of the quickest ways to watch your money fly right into the pockets of the casino. The more alert and mentally focussed you are on winning, the better your odds are of actually doing so!

7) Don’t Chase Comps – Many players chase comps that they could have just purchased many times over with the money they lost gambling to try to get them. Unless you know specifically you are only a few points off a fantastic comp, you should always play to win, not to get a comp.

Good luck, have fun, and go win lots of money!

Visit Las Vegas at the Drop of a Hat

Saturday, October 15th, 2011

I’m not a particularly spontaneous person and I certainly like to know what I’m doing in the week ahead.  I’m not the kind of guy who can/will leave everything at the drop of a hat and head off to a luxury destination.  My family knows me well enough not to spring surprises on me… which didn’t stop them doing so of course!   Last weekend, celebrating a milestone birthday, my better half took me on a supposed lunch date to my favorite restaurant, and we landed up driving to the airport where she popped us on a plane and took us down to Vegas for three super days. We had great fun at the Bellagio (yes, yes, she spoiled me), and I even managed to win a handsome sum at the blackjack tables – happy birthday me!  Flying back, I realized two things – firstly, I’m am no longer afraid of surprises and, secondly, it’s possible to go on a last minute visit to Las Vegas and still enjoy yourself.

In honor of my great trip, here are a couple of tips that will allow you to enjoy a last-minute Vegas vacation:

Accommodation:  The internet is a great source of information when it comes to finding last-minute deals to Las Vegas.  Many top hotels will let their rooms go at incredibly cut-rates just so that they don’t stand empty, and you can definitely find some amazing deals if you look hard enough.  Be flexible.  Have a list of several hotel options and the chances are that if you don’t find a room in the hotel that was at the top of your list, you’ll find one in choice number two or three.

Flights: You’ll find cheap flights pretty much the same way you’ll find cheap accommodation. Trawl a number of internet flight sites and you’ll find some great bargains.  They may be at odd hours and again, flexibility is the word, but if you want to get there badly enough, you’ll be game!  Another tip: Don’t dismiss walk-off-the-street travel agents.  These guys sometimes have some great last-minute deals and you’ll be surprised at how quickly it will take you from sitting behind their desks to jetting off to Vegas!

Aping Around in Vegas: A Visit to the Nevada Zoo

Saturday, September 17th, 2011

On your next trip to Las Vegas, you may want to take a break from those all-night slot sessions and get back to nature now and then.  What better way to appreciate the ecological side of Nevada than to visit the local zoo which is situated a short fifteen minutes away from the Strip.

The Southern Nevada Zoological and Botanical Park (a long winded way of saying the Las Vegas Zoo) is a lovely three acre park which is managed by the non profit Nevada Zoological Foundation.  This is the only zoo Vegas and the only zoo which operates around the year in Nevada. There are over 150 species of plants and animals and the zoo makes a great excursion for individuals and families who like to complement their gambling entertainment with other super things that the area has to offer.

The zoo is home to a number of endangered cats and the last family of Barbary apes in the United States, which highlights the important work that the foundation is doing. Visitors can also find chimps, emus, ostriches, wallabies, flamingos, and other birds, as well as the strange fossa, which is the largest predator in Madagascar.

But the zoo is not only about animals.  The Las Vegas Gem Club holds exhibitions in the zoo grounds, and plant lovers will enjoy the display of rare bamboos.

Others things to do include a very interesting Desert Eco Tour which will teach you more than a thing or two about the Nevada environment, and you can get to marvel up close at the 250 million year fossils found in the region.

The Las Vegas Zoo is open every day from 9 am until 5 am and, at present, the entrance fee for adults is $9 and $7  for kids.  Children until 2 can get in free.

Just as an aside, I heard from an acquaintance recently that several people complained about the zoo, believing that the temperatures were too high for some of the animals.  Authorities have been to visit and declared that the zoo meets all the criteria needed to ensure that animals are well cared for and healthy.

The Ultimate Gambling Getaways

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Itching to go on a trip with your friends or that special someone?  Now may be the perfect time to start planning. The summer crowds will be gone next week and the weather is still perfect to have a great time.

Here is a list of some of the best gambling getaways available in the world:

Las Vegas

Yes, yes. I know this is an obvious one, but you can’t start off any list without Las Vegas as the ultimate gambling destination. There are so many great hotels and resorts in Sin City that you are completely spoiled for choice.  Try out the Platinum Hotel and Spa or the Four Seasons for top pampering.  Enjoy a huge range of activities, including sky diving, shopping, bungee jumping and a whole lot more.  And of course, nothing beats Vegas for some of the finest cuisine in the world.

Puerto Rica, Caribbean

Stay at the Double Tree by Hilton San Juan or the Hotel San Convento for the ultimate island enjoyment.  There is plenty to do, besides gambling and slots gaming of course, and you can visit the beach, horse ride or just take in the amazing views in this Caribbean wonderland.

Baden Baden, Germany

In the heart of the Black Forest, Baden Baden beckons gamblers who love the sophisticated mood of European casinos.  You can take time to visit the healing baths of this area after a tough night of gambling and enjoy the magnificent scenery.

Paradise Island, Bahamas

Think white beaches, sleeping palms and exotic drinks and you’ve got yourself the ultimate gambling getaway. If the only pace you want to go by is your heartbeat and you want time to stand still, then Paradise Island is the location for you.  Don’t forget to check out the gambling opportunities here too!

Lake Tahoe, Nevada

Ok, so maybe this list isn’t impartial and maybe, just maybe, I’m a Nevada freak, but you have to agree that Lake Tahoe’s scenery ranks pretty up in the world with some of the best out there. Stay at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort or the quaintly named Pine Cone Resort.

Anyone want to add to my list?

Ken Uston: King of the Blackjack Table

Friday, August 5th, 2011

There have been many people over the years who have grabbed the interest of the gambling public with their remarkable skills in a particular game.  Ken Uston was one of those people, and he has been hailed as one of the most remarkable blackjack players of all times, if not the best in known history.

Uston was a man of superior intelligence, having graduated high stool at the age of 16 and then attending both Yale and Harvard, and majoring in business.  He did extremely well in the world of business, until, in his thirties, he discovered one of the first books to bring the theories and strategies of blackjack to the masses: Edward Thorpe’s Beat the Dealer: A Winning Strategy for the Game of Twenty One.

Uston was absolutely fascinated with the book and studied it frm cover to cover.  Then, using the book as his basis, he developed his own theories and strategies and eventually came to the conclusion that if he wanted to get far in the game, he would need to create a team of talented card counters and hit the tables of Atlantic City and Vegas.

During the 1970′s, Uston and his team of counters visited Las Vegas for the first time and won $27K in just one hour.  Seeing this as a turning point in his life, Uston quit his job and became a professional gambler, with him and his team taking on the biggest stakes in Vegas . The Sands management eventually banned them from the casino after one particularly good session when Uston won $200K, after which time, Uston felt that it was time to move to Atlantic City.

Eventually, he was banned from there too and Uston decided that if he was going to continue with his new job, he’d have to ensure that he was legally able to.  As such, in 1982, he took the casinos to the Supreme Court, which ruled that card counting does not constitute cheating and he could not be legally banned from these establishments.

Nevertheless, the casinos got one up on Uston and his team, by changing the rules of blackjack and making card card counting virtually impossible.  He ended his days as a professional gambler, having won over $1 million in a decade and earning himself a victorious Supreme Court ruling in the process!

Bookie Found Alive 30 Years After Being Declared Dead

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

I had to share this story about a guy who was believed to be dead for over 30 years – only to resurface in Las Vegas working as a bookie under a false name.  The story began in 1979 when Arthur Gerald Jones, a bookie by trade, got into financial difficulties and was even forced to sell his seat at the Board of Trade.  This is some speculation that he got caught up with the Mob and had no choice but to disappear.  On the day that he disappeared, he told his wife and three young kids that he was going out on an errand – and never returned.  The police investigated the case for a while, but when no concrete evidence turned up after several years, he was declared dead by an Illinois court in 1986 so that his wife and family could receive some form of compensation.

It turns out that two weeks before his disappearance, Jone’s best friend arranged for him to receive false identity papers.  He then used a number of aliases and identity documents while living in California, Florida and Nevada.  Police believe that what prompted Jones to pull a disappearing act – besides his gambling debts and marital problems – is the fact that several weeks before he went undercover, his best friend was murdered, presumably by the mob, in his Inverness home.  The fear that this might happen to him, and endanger his children, prompted Jones to make his final decision.

In the thirty odd years since his disappearance, Jones has made a fresh start relationship wise, and has been with the same partner for 22 years.  Patricia Baal is supporting him, and it is still unclear whether she knew that he was hiding a murky past or not.

Last week, Jones was arrested after it was discovered that he was working as a bookie under a false name in Las Vegas. He now faces four felony counts related to identity theft and fraud. A plea deal has been offered that will allow him to stand trial for just one charge of ID theft, and he has already posted bail for $20,000.

The Highest Toilet in Vegas: The Stratosphere Casino!

Sunday, July 24th, 2011

If you’ve found yourself in the embarrassing situation of needing the bathroom, with no public cubicles in sight, you probably don’t care where you go.  But if you’re planning a trip to Vegas, you may want to do the ultimate kitsch thing and make it a point of using the highest bathroom in Vegas – at the top of the Stratosphere Vegas  Hotel and Casino.

First of all make sure that you actually don’t need the bathroom when you plan your visit, because getting to the top takes quite a bit of time!  After parking your car, you’ll need to make your way to the center of the casino without being distracted by the loose slot machines and tempting table games along the way.  You’ll then stand in line to purchase an admission ticket to make your way to the observation deck which, at 1149 feet, is the highest spot west of the Mississippi.  After you’ve bought your admission ticket, you’re ready for a ride up in the world famous Stratosphere elevators – which are not for the fainthearted!   However, even before getting to these elevators, you need to pass through a mall, where you’ll be tempted with typical Vegas souvenirs,  lots of fast food options and more.  Be ready to risk another 20 minutes of your time getting through the mall to the elevators.

Once you’ve passed through a security check point, the ride up to the top of the tower is indeed thrilling and although it only takes 30 seconds, you’ll be glad that you did it.  Then you’re ready to step out onto the observation deck – a 360 degree mammoth, which provides an incredible view of Las Vegas and beyond the city in all their glory.  By this time, you may have forgotten your objective – to use the highest bathrooms in Vegas.  Between you and me, these bathrooms aren’t exactly the height of luxury – pun intended. They’re small and slightly run down, with no major wow factor that you’d expect from the highest toilets in Vegas.  But don’t worry, because if you really need to use them by now, they’ll do just fine for the intended purpose!

More Fun Facts about Gambling

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

OK, I’m on a roll!  After bringing you some super interesting facts about Nevada recently, I thought I’d bring you part two – this time about gambling!

Did you know that….

  • Nearly forty million people visit Las Vegas every single year.
  • In Ancient Greece, winners of sporting contests were awarded celery as prizes.  These were also carried by marathon runners to show their competence.
  • Also in Ancient Greece, dice were made out of materials such as sheep shoulder blades and ankle bones.
  • Football may be considered a reasonably high risk contact sport today, but it’s not as bad as it was back in 1905.  In that year, no less than 19 players died in high school and college competitions.
  • The lights of Vegas are always a talking point and one must wonder how much electricity is spent by top hotels each month.  One interesting point is that the marquees of fifty of the biggest casinos and hotels in Vegas use enough electricity to power one thousand average households in the United States!
  • The Las Vegas Strip is officially a scenic byway. According to the panel who gave the strip this title, the many interesting images along the way, such as the city’s glitzy lights, erupting volcanoes and pyramids make it a ‘culturally enriching’ view and therefore deserves to be called a scenic byway.
  • No patent has ever been taken out on a gambling machine in Nevada.
  • In 1973, the racehorse Secretariat made media history by appearing on the front cover of three prestigious magazines – Newsweek, Times and Sports Illustrated.
  • In 1966 , Howard Hughes, the erratic aviator and film director moved into the Desert Inn Hotel and began his infamous stay at the institution, until he was asked by management to leave two years later because of his weird behavior.  Hughes decided that he would rather stay put than move and so he promptly bought up the hotel instead.
  • There are so many slot machines in Vegas that there are around eight or nine per inhabitant of the city.
If you have any interesting facts about gambling, I’d be happy to hear about them!

Most Expensive Casino Chip Sold for $30,000!

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Who knew that a $1 casino chip could increase its value by 30,000??!  So listen to this story: A woman from the United States decided that she wanted to make a little bit of pocket money by selling some of her old trinkets on ebay.  Sandy Marbs was a retired Kwik Copy worker who was living on social benefits, and wanted to supplement her income with some of her possessions. After rummaging through her jewelry box, she came across a casino chip from Vegas’ Showboat Casino, which had lying among her bits and bobs for nearly 50 years.  She uploaded the chip’s details to ebay in the $5 – $30 section and said that she would have sold it if she was offered $10 for it.

Luckily for Marbs, there are still some honest people left in this world, and casino chip collectors, who are well known experts in the world of gambling memorabilia, contacted her to warn her not to take the first offer.  They brought with them some good news – the casino chip had a market value of $15,000!  The chip had become highly collectible, as it came from one of Vegas’s most classic spots – the Showboat Casino which had been open from 1954 to 2001.

Sandy decided to act on the advice given to her by the Casino Chip and Gaming Token Collectors Club, to take better pictures of the $1 chip and upload it to a different section of ebay.  Within hours, there was strong bidding for the little round piece, and it was eventually sold for a record price of nearly $30,000! The chip was bought by avid collector, Glenn Grush, who said that it would make a great addition to his collection.

This is the highest price paid in history for a $1 chip, although $100,000 was paid for a Sahara $100 chip. “There are certain chips that are considered classic rarities like in any hobby,” said President of the Collectors Club, Wayne Thompson. “Most of our almost 3000 members collect at a much lower price scale but derive the same enjoyment from the hobby.  We are truly fortunate to have such a diversity of members.”
