Strangest Tales of Luck

Saturday, November 5th, 2011

We all hope that good fortune goes with us when we gamble – whether at online casinos, land slot parlors or home poker games.  Good luck is just as important as skill elements in many games you play – sometimes even more important when dealing with games based solely on luck.   There are many theories and superstitions based on bringing good fortune but nobody knows what – if anything – increases your fortunes.

Here are some of the strangest tales of luck which have come my way:

- A church in Nebraska exploded in 1950 and, amazingly, nobody was injured.  The explosion took place 5 minutes after the 15-man choir was due to start rehearsals but in an amazing twist of fortune, all of them were late for practice that evening. It wasn’t even one single reason that made them all late – some had car trouble, a couple wanted to finish their ironing and one woke up late from an afternoon nap. These random reasons can only be put down to good fortune – and definitely saved their lives!

- A waitress in Yonkers New York received the biggest tip ever – over $140,000 a year for a 20 year period.  The young lady offered such friendly service that a policeman who ordered from her promised her that if he hit the lottery, he’d give her half the winnings.  The waitress chose three numbers on the lottery ticket and the policeman the other three and, amazingly, they hit the jackpot! Each took home $3 million in prize money.  Moral of the story: Be nice – it could change your fortune :)

- In 1995, a couple from Texas used the numbers predicted in a fortune cookie to purchase lottery tickets – and won.  Amazingly, the husband went in to purchase a ticket, using the same numbers, and a little while later, his wife did the same, also using the fortune cookie numbers.  When the numbers came up, they both won and pocketed over $1.6 million.

- And, finally, a tale of misfortune.  A 73 year old who won $76,000 on a game show lottery was run down by a car less than four hours after his massive winning.  Incredibly, the man said that he was planning to buy a car with his new found fortune….

Moving to the UK’s Lottery Millionaire Hot Spot

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

That’s it!  I think I have finally cracked that illusive lottery code.  The one that means that I have a better chance than anyone to win the lottery and take home millions of dollars in prize money. OK, so maybe it wasn’t actually ME who cracked the code and maybe it doesn’t guarantee me a win, but, hey, I’m quite happy to do anything it takes (well, almost), to put myself in line to win cool cash!   If I was to go according to the latest statistics issued by the operators of the UK National Lottery, Camelot, I’d be packing up house and moving to the North East of the UK.  According to Camelot, this is the Millionaire Hot Spot of the land, the place where more winners are declared per adult resident than any other region in the country.

The Millionaire Map placed the over 2,700 instant millionaires declared in the UK since the lottery was launched in 1994 and showed that the North East is, without a doubt, the most fertile ground for lottery winnings. The numbers show that one in 14,211 North East residents were made millionaires overnight – which are not bad odds at all if you take into account the odds of other lotteries around the globe!

If the North East isn’t quite your cup of tea, you may want to consider Wales, which is another hot spot.  Although more millionaires have been created in London, the Midlands and across the South east of England, a spokesman for Camelot said that, statistically, the North East is the luckiest part of the UK based on the number of winners versus the adult population.

Sadly, moving to the UK doesn’t quite fit in with my life-plan at the moment.  For one, my better half is quick-sand-stuck in her career on this side of the pond, and, although I am more nomadic and adventurous in nature, I still think it would be hard to uproot right now.  So here’s my plan for my twilight years:  I will buy a cottage in a quaint village in the North East of England, and every week I will walk down to the local store to buy myself a lottery ticket.  I will then win the lottery and move directly to London, where I will go to shows and museums every day that is left of my life.  I like my plan….

Gambling Through Ice and Snow

Saturday, August 20th, 2011

I’ve gambled in quite a number of locations around the world, but I have to admit that I’ve never reached Iceland to gamble in such an extreme climate.   Gambling has had its ups and downs in Iceland, starting in the 1920s when the government banned its citizens from playing the lottery because they didn’t want the local currency to be spent on foreign lotteries.  The laws were eased a little in the next decade and the University of Iceland was allowed to offer a lottery.  This was basically the only type of gambling entertainment allowed until the 1970s when a sports lottery was introduced, and the 1980′s saw the introduction of a state lotto.  In 1994, the Icelandic government decided to bring about a slightly more liberal gambling regime and partially legalized slots.

But that’s about it.  There are no casinos to speak of in Iceland and the laws actually state that you are not allowed to be a professional gambler.  Having said that, around 70% of the adults in this population of 320,000 have said that they gamble regularly, usually on lotteries and scratch  cards.  It is possible, within limits, to gamble online in Iceland, as the government provides online lotteries and sports betting through monopoly sites.  However, the majority of online gamblers in Iceland turn to offshore gaming sites, which provide top notch entertainment backed by powerful software groups, excellent games such as online slots and blackjack, as well as generous casino bonuses.

In June 2011, the National Lottery, Islensk Getspa chose the software company, Betware, to power a future mobile lottery for gamblers on the go. Betware has already started to adapt Iceland’s lottery to suit a mobile platform and it should be available at the end of the year or at the beginning of 2012.  Players will be able to bet on sport in Iceland using smart phones and other mobile devices.  Users will have access to their lottery accounts, and will be able to pay for their gaming fun using ewallets suited especially for their market.  They will also have access to their mobile gambling history and will be able to check winning numbers.

True Gambling Tale: Man Wins Lottery Twice in Same Day

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

I love reading about interesting/heart-warming/incredible gambling-related stories, and this latest one came to my attention recently, even though it happened two years ago.

James McAllister celebrated a Valentine’s Day he’ll never forget after doing the practically impossible – winning the lottery twice… on the same day!  The odds of this happening are staggering, but McAllister is walking proof that it can really happen!

It all began when the 62 year old decided to take his wife out for a Valentine’s Day breakfast, and during a stop off along Highway 92 in Georgia, he purchased a Millionaire Jumbo Bucks scratch off ticket.  McAllister was over the moon when he found out that he had won $5,000 on this lottery ticket – certainly enough to pamper his wife with anything her heart desired on that Valentine’s Day.

But McAllister obviously felt that this was his lucky day and decided that he would purchase another lottery ticket, just for the fun of it. He went out shopping for a Valentine’s card for his wife, and bought another lottery ticket at the same time.  This time there was no denying it – Lady Luck was definitely on his side that day. McAllister found himself the winner of a staggering $250,000 !  A romantic until the very end, McAllister said: “It was because of Valentine’s Day. If it hadn’t been for my wife, I probably wouldn’t have won either time.”

So check out these odds:  McAllister  had a one in ten thousand chance of winning the first lottery, the $5,000 windfall that he had.  Then, look at the odds of winning the $250,000 prize – one in a million!  Now combine those odds and see what the chances are of winning these two lotteries in the same day!  They are truly staggering!

McAllister opted to receive his Georgia Lottery prize in one lump sum, even though it meant that Uncle Sam would get a good chunk of it for tax reasons.  However, the couple will definitely have enough money left in the bank to enjoy many more Valentines Day together!

A Heartwarming Lottery Tale

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Now and then, I like to bring you a heartwarming lottery tale that I pick up in news articles from around the world.  Sometimes they’re mega wins worth millions of dollars, and sometimes, like this one, they aren’t massive, but they certainly tickle in all the right places.

So here goes:  A man and a woman recently reconnected later in life, after not having seeing each other for years and years.  Kimberley and Larry, both from Maryland, used to know each other when their kids were very young, but then lost touch with each other.  Years later, Kimberley drove into a drive-thru to pick up a meal, and the teller serving her was Larry’s daughter.  The girl recognized Kimberley and got all excited that she was seeing a face from your childhood.  A little while later, Kimberley received a letter in the mail (yes, some people still use this form of communication!) from Larry, asking if she’d like to meet up for coffee.  After that first date, the two have been together ever since.

A great friendship soon turned into love, and the couple were married in a short but meaningful ceremony last year.  This year, they are planning to go all out with a big church wedding, and all the plans have been made. However, no money was left over for a honeymoon.  On that long-winded background, I’ll get to the lottery bit of my tale.  Larry decided to purchase five lottery tickets for his wife who had been a little ‘under the weather’.

However, the clerk accidentally ripped off six tickets and Larry saw it as a sign that he should be purchasing six instead of five.  Incredibly, the sixth ticket landed him a luxury cruise trip for him and his wife – something that they so passionately wanted in order to complete their fairy tale  wedding. The Cruise for Cash scratchoff tickets were offering these fantastic prizes to lucky winners, and nothing could have come at a better time for a better couple!

Helen Mirren Tells of her Lottery Dream

Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

The vast majority of us dream about winning the lottery, but that’s because we can always do with that extra cash to pay off our mortgage, fix up our car or take that dream holiday that we know we’ll never be able to afford on our current salary.  Buying the lottery ticket is like buying a fantasy, and even if we know that the odds of us winning are minute, at least we can fantasize what we’re going to do with the millions if we ever win.

But have you ever stopped to think that celebs also buy lottery tickets? My first reaction when I heard this the other day was: ‘What for?’ After all, when you’re earning seven digit sums on movies, why would you even waste your time buying a lottery ticket?

Well, it turns out that movie stars have their ownlottery dreams. Take Helen Mirren, for example, one of the most respected actresses of all times.  In a recent interview, Mirren said that she still buys lottery tickets, and when she was asked why, she said it was to pay for her Italian castle. It turns out that the poor dear purchased an Italian castle in 2007, in the stunning area of Puglia, and now needs a hefty amount to refurbish it.

“When the lottery gets big, up to $50 million, I buy a ticket, because maybe I will win,” she said. “It’s a fantasy we all have.”

It seems that Dame Mirren has been inspired by her roles in films such Elizabeth I and The Queen and wanted to own her own piece of royal property. However, owning a castle definitely comes with a price tag.  A 500 year old castle like the one Mirren purchased is usually in less than pristine condition, and Mirren and her husband Tylor Hackford were well aware that they’d have to pour literally millions of dollars in to make the place habitable. But I guess, if you have a talent like Mirren’s and know that you’ll be making top paying movies for a long while still, buying a castle may not seem such a crazy thing – even if you need the lottery to keep it going!

My Best Lottery Jokes

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

A recent survey run by the UK Gambling Commission found that the lottery is the most common form of gambling among the British people and literally millions buy at least one lottery ticket each week. If you look at the lottery from an objective point of view, your chances of hitting it big are quite minute, however, I believe that lottery players are not only buying that chance of winning the jackpot – they are buying the opportunity to dream for at least a week what they’ll do with the massive sums of money that’ll come their way.

To celebrate the joy that lotteries bring us, I’m sharing with you some of my favorite lottery jokes:

Farmin’ the Lottery

An old farmer wins $10 million on the lottery and is interviewed by the local TV station. Naturally, he is asked what he is going to do with all that money. He scratches his heads and says, “Well, I dunno, really. Guess I’ll have to keep farmin’ till it’s all gone.”

Happy Husband

A man rushes into his home, waving his arms hysterically and yelling: “Mary, Mary, pack your things. I’ve just won the national lottery!”

Mary stops the housework, jumps up and down in glee and says: “Wonderful! What shall I pack for? Warm or cold weather?”

Her husband replies: “Doesn’t really matter, honey. As long as you’re out the house by noon!”

Tennessee Lottery

Did you hear about the $20 million lottery in Tennessee? The winner gets to win $2 a year for a million years.

Redneck Lottery Winner

A redneck buys a ticket and wins the lottery. He goes to Austin to claim it and the man verifies his ticket number. The redneck then says: “I want my $20 million!”

The lottery official explains patiently: “Sorry sir, but it doesn’t work that way. We pay you $1 million now and the rest is spread over the next 19 years at a rate of $1 million a year.”

The redneck gets a little red around the neck and yells: “No! I want my $20 million now. I won it fair and square!”

To which, again, the official explained the lottery’s policy.

The rednack, leans over, bangs his hand on the table and yells: “Look! I want my $20 million now. If you’re not going to give it to me now, I want my $2 back!”

New Zealand Quake Adds More Gambling Opportunities

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

One of the greatest tragedies to hit New Zealand occured last week, when an earthquake ripped through downtown Christchurch, killing over 100 people, injuring many more, destroying homes, cutting water supplies and ruining infrastructure. No doubt, the government needs to spend millions restoring this scenic South Island city to its former glory and will be seeking out any possible way to fund its project.

As such, the Minister of Interior, Nathan Guy announced over the weekend, that he would be using his ministerial powers to trigger a special clause of the country’s Gambling Act to run a unique lottery that can benefit the Christchurch community. The minister also said that half of all the money that is collected in this week’s lotteries will go to the Christchurch earthquake relief. Fifty cents of every dollar spent on Lotto, Lotto Strike and Lotto Powerball in the coming week would be donated to help with relief work, said the Lotteries Commission.

Throughout the week, there were major efforts by New Zealanders on social network sites such as Facebook and Twitter to get the Lotteries Commission to make a much bigger donation. One of the proposals was to donate this week’s $15 million Powerball win to the Christchurch victims. However, the Commission said that while it was perfectly understandable that people wanted this to happen, it was not legally possible for it to do so. “New Zealand Lotteries is governed by a very strict legal framework called the game rules and these set out in detail how the prize pool is allocated,” said a spokeswoman for NZ Lotteries, Karen Jones. “It is not possible under that legal framework to cancel a draw or re-allocate prizes.”

The spokeswoman also said that the Lotteries Commission had been innundated with hundreds of emails, with suggestions on how they may help the victims. “We are absolutely keen to help and are willing to do so,” she said.

Wouldn’t it be great if this week’s Powerball winner originated in Christchurch?

Simon Cowell Launches New Lottery Style Game Show

Saturday, February 19th, 2011

Simon Cowell, possibly the most famous of all TV show producers, has been gambling in show business for many years, but this week he announced one of his most ambitious projects to date. Cashing in on the English nation’s love of their National Lottery, Cowell will be launching a new live quiz show run in a lottery-type format, with the winner guaranteed to win a staggering GBP 1 million!

Codenamed ‘Roulette‘, the new show will be presented by Britain’s Got Talent hosts, the comedy duo Dec and Ant.  I read this week that 17,000 people will pay GBP 1 for a ticket that will give them a chance to enter the draw to take part in the ITV1 show.  Those chosen will then get a chance to take part in live challenges to go for the top prize. According to some of the reports I’ve seen, the pilot show will take part in June, and all the quiz episodes will be aired from Wembley’s Arena in London.

The 51 year old Simon Cowell is best known for his shows such as X-Factor, as well as being a panel judge on the US-based American Idol. The very ambitious Cowell has made millions through these shows, and many believe that the new show could either be yet another show stopper – or his ticket out of the industry. “It’s a big gamble for Simon as it could be telly’s biggest ever turkey if it goes wrong,” one source was quoted as saying. “This will be one of the most ambitious TV shows ever staged.”  The source went on to say that while details are still under wraps for now, it is known that people will pay a small price – only GBP 1 – for the chance to take part.  “Simon is confident that because millions vote for the X Factor each week, they will be prepared to pay.”

Cowell previously proposed another idea to TV bosses in the form of a Saturday night TV show (ala Top of the Pops), however that was vetoed by ITV1 and they moved on to his next idea – the lottery style quiz show.

I, for one, am looking forward to another Cowell inspired masterpiece.

Has the Canadian Lottery Scratch Card System Been Cracked?

Sunday, February 6th, 2011

I was floored when I read the latest edition of Wired magazine, which describes how a very modest and unassuming guy from Toronto may have cracked the code on Scratch-and-Win lottery type tickets. According to 52 year old Mohan Srivastava, a geological statistician by profession, he first discovered the secret when he managed to correctly predict the outcome of Tic Tac Toe scratch tickets back in 2003 by up to 95% of the time. He made the discovery quite by accident when a sports buddy purchased him a card as a stunt, and he landed up winning $3 on the card. More important than the win was the fact that by doing a few simple math problems in his head, Srivastava managed to work out the pattern of numbers on the face of the card and how certain cards could be winners, why others would be losers.

According to Srivastava, he has an “odd combination of skills” – intimate knowledge of statistics, computer programming and spatial analysis. As such, if anyone was going to know how to crack the code, it was this guy!

The article in Wired magazine asked the statistician to pick winning cards out of a random stack of twenty different lottery cards. After examining the cards, which he had not seen before, Srivastava picked out six which he considered may be winners. Turns out the guy was right in four of them – the odds of this happening are one in 50.

Now, most of us are wondering why the guy didn’t just keep his theory to himself and make himself a packet with his abilities. Apparently, he is such a nice guy that he actually approached the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation who issue these tickets, asking them to look into his theory and ensure that they really are as secure and random as they claim to be. “Being a lottery corporation that’s handling billions of dollars, I think they should say ‘We need to make sure this is just luck’,” said Srivastava.  However, OLG, which just started running online casinos, incidentally, replied that while they welcomed cooperation with the statistician, “there’s absolutely no indication there’s a problem with our games.”  Hmm. I think we’re going to be hearing a lot more about this guy….
