Reaping the Rewards of Black Friday

Sunday, July 17th, 2011

April 2011 will go down in history as one of the darkest months for online poker in the United States, when the Department of Justice swooped down on some of the major sites and shut them down literally overnight.  Sites such as Full Tilt Poker, UB.com and Poker Stars were flung from the top of the ladder and had to start dealing with the problem of paying out millions of dollars to their players.  Poker Stars was able to start paying out almost immediately, and nobody can find fault with the way this site has honored all money due to its players.  UB.com seems to be a lost cause and hasn’t even bothered making a statement regarding the money owed, while Full Tilt Poker is the site in the news most often these days, trying desperately to find investors so that players can be paid back the almost $1.5 million owed to them.

Nobody can argue that Black Friday threw the online poker world upside down, but, as my grandpa used to say “use the juice for lemonade and throw out the pips”.  In other words, while Black Friday has been truly back for many players, there are some who have managed to find the good in this event.  Take, for example, the fact that with so many players migrating from the top sites, other online poker rooms are offering some of the best offers seen in the industry in a very long time!  From some of the best online bonuses, to excellent promotions that competitors simply cannot beat, players are absolutely spoiled for choice.   Some sites, such as Party Poker decided to run a promotion where all entry fees into tournaments were abolished.  Other sites have literally doubled their welcome bonuses so that players get more for their initial deposits.  Some sites are even honoring the VIP status enjoyed by players at their former sites, and are matching those statuses at their own sites, with all the perks and unique bonuses that come with the territory.  So while Black Friday was a black mark in online poker history, it has definitely triggered some excellent promos out there.

US Poker Pros Migrate to Canada

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

It’s hard to believe that so much has changed in the US since the government decided to go on a witchhunt after online poker sites and prosecute their main men. Since Black Friday, which April 15th has become known as, many professional poker players in the United States have been forced to question the state of their livelihood and whether they can continue to live in the country in order to continue supporting themselves and, in many cases, their families as well.

One of the phenomenas we are experiencing is the migration of some of these professionals to Canada.  It seems almost preposterous that in this day and age, decent American folk, who simply want to support their families by doing what they do best through something that harms nobody, would be forced to even consider leaving their home and country in order to make a living.  But here you go folks – welcome to Prohibition circa 2011.

If you already have to move, then Canada may seem to be the best option. For one, players are used to a similar lifestyle, and the language is naturally the same. That clears up some of the settling in problems. Another good thing about being a pro in Canada is that you are now able to play at poker sites that weren’t previously open to you, such as Party Poker.  In addition, if you can prove that you have a Canadian residential address and bank account, you’ll be accepted back to Poker Stars, for example.

But with every advantage, there are disadvantages as well, and nobody is promising US pros that the grass is always greener on the other side of the border.  For one, there are greater expenses involved if you decide to become pro in Canada, this biggest being the fact that you are taxed on your winnings. Also, you may need to work in another profession for a while in order to meet the criteria for Canadian immigration laws. Naturally, all these things need to be taken into account if you decide to make the move.

Will the Netherlands Finally Allow Online Gambling?

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

Dutch gamblers may have something to rejoice about soon if reports coming out of this European country are anything to go by.  It was revealed on Saturday that the new coalition government wants to start offering gambling licenses to online operators which makes for quite a significant move, considering that the Netherlands has always staunchly defended its right to ban online gambling.

A spokesman for the Dutch Ministry of Public Safety said: “It’s a big shift in policy but this is a new government with a more liberal approach.”

As it is, the government is well aware that hundreds of thousands of Dutch gamblers already seek their online gambling entertainment online, despite the country’s outright ban on doing so.  Experts in the country have suggested that the government should offer online gambling licenses so that it could oversee the industry more effectively.  More and more European governments, such as in Italy and France, have realized that they have to make substantial changes to their legislation if they want to have control over their gamblers.

Over the years, a number of top gambling companies such as Betfair and Ladbrokes have challenged the Dutch government’s stance on barring foreign competition and supporting a monopoly, however they have been unsuccesful in all instances. However, experts agree that Dutch gamblers should have an open market, where they can choose their games and products from a diverse range and enjoy protection against scams and fraud.

The new Dutch government has publicly stated that it will reverse the country’s stance on internet gambling and allow companies to apply for gambling licenses.

The government controls a state-run lottery which is enormously popular and it also controls all land-based casinos. At present, the legislation governing online gambling is reminiscent of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforecement Act (UIGEA) in the United States, where banks and credit card organizations are banned from honoring transactions to and from online casino sites.

However, as stated, the Dutch are not willing to give up their online gambling habits that quickly and changes need to be made to the current laws if the government wishes to keep a finger on the industry’s pulse.

Susan is the Luckiest Online Bingo Name!

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Here’s some good news – If your name is Susan, you’re in your forties, you’re a Taurus and your live in Birmingham, UK, you should take up online bingo NOW. According to a recent report issued by Gala Bingo, the leading online bingo site, these are the ultimate statistics of its luckiest players. The information was gleaned after tracking winners at Gala Bingo over five years to see exactly which criteria matches those players who win big jackpots time after time.

Gala Bingo studied data on a staggering six billion tickets that were sold over the past years and found that the name Susan topped the winner’s list year after year (except for 2006 when Karen rose to number one). Julie also appeared near the top of the list, and it was disclosed that in the past five years, Susans and Julies have grabbed GBP 131 million worth of prizes from Gala Bingo!

Overall, these are the top five names:

1. Susan

2. Julie

3. Linda

4. Karen

5. Margaret

As can be seen, women are definitely luckier than men when it comes to winning at online bingo!

The top 5 UK towns among Gala Bingo’s winners were as follows:

1. Birmingham

2. Sheffield

3. Newcastle

4. Doncaster

5. Bristol

When it comes to star signs, there is no arguing with the facts – those born under the Taurus sign are the luckiest bingo players around. They are followed by Cancer, Aries, Leo and, fifth, Gemini.

Gala Bingo also examined the luckiest age of its winning players and found that those who were born in the 1960s definitely had an advantage over other players. The top five years of birth among winners were, in order of descent, 1962, 1965, 1961, 1971 and 1963.

It’s also worth noting that since Gala Bingo launched its online site in 2006, it has paid out a staggering GBP 4 billion in prize money – and that’s in under five years!  The site gives away GBP 65 million each and every month and it comes as no surprise that players flock to this site to check out the games and jackpots on offer – even if their name isn’t Susan!

Washington Bids Farewell to Online Poker Sites

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

I get perfectly agitated when I read about how Washington State treats its online poker players – literally like criminals. According to the statute books, anyone found playing online poker is charged with a Felony C crime (together with child pornographers!). Talk about harsh!

Washington has always been ahead in the game when it comes to clamping down on internet gambling. Various efforts have been made throughout the last few years to have some of the tough laws overturned, the most recent being in a case backed by the Poker Players Alliance, which managed to reach the Washington Supreme Court. Unfortunately, the court upheld Washington’s law that online gambling is outlawed and at this point, I think that some of the online poker sites simply gave up.

Until the last ruling, online poker rooms such as Poker Stars and Full Tilt Poker were still offering their games and services to players from Washington. They always maintained that there was no outright law banning them from doing so and, despite federal laws such as the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, continued to welcome players from Washington and the rest of the United States.

However, after the 2010 ruling, Poker Stars became the first poker room to announce that it wouldn’t be accepting players from Washington anymore. While everybody understood the move, it still came as a surprise them. Soon afterwards, Full Tilt Poker decided to follow suit and blocked Washington players as well.  They made the departure a little less harsh and agreed to accept WA players as long as they had an out of state address.

This weekend, I learned that two other online poker rooms are leaving the state as well. The latest two are Matchbook.com and VIP Sports.

I checked out the email sent by Matchbook.com to its players and it read: “Thank you for funding your Matchbook account in the past, but going forward  we will no longer process any withdrawals from your state. We request that you stop making deposits to your account from your current address. If in the future deposits are accepted again in your area, we will be sure to inform you. We apologize for this inconvenience.”

Here’s hoping that these are the last two sites to leave the state and that this year marks a turnaround for online poker in the state.

The Fishy Tale of the Psychic Octopus

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

The fishiest tale to come out of the world of gambling and sports betting involved an octopus with the unlikely name of Paul. This two and a half year old squid lived his life in relative tranquility at the Oberhausen Sea Life Aquarium in Germany, oblivious to the world around him, until his owners decided to test his soccer skills. Poor Paul was asked to predict the outcome of matches during the most recent World Cup soccer tournament in South Africa involving Germany. The owners would place Paul’s meals under two draped flags – one of Germany and the other of the competing team. Whichever flag Paul chose was predicted to be the winner of the match.

Paul’s talents proved to be remarkable, and he correctly predicted the outcome of all Germany’s games, and then went on to predict that Spain would win the tournament outright, at odds of 256:1.  Paul even managed to make some enemies along the way when he received death threats from angry German fans after he predicted that Germany would lose in the semi final of the World Cup. The Prime Minister of Spain promised his protection after Paul proved correct in that prediction as well.

Paul managed to build himself quite a fan base as well, with millions of soccer and online casino fans from all over the world following his ‘advice’ and placing bets based on his predictions. Many people swear that Paul made them very rich during the World Cup. He became so popular that his owner received offers from zoos and aquariums around the world to buy him for a hefty sum. Luckily for him, they were refused outright, and he managed to go back to his old life after the World Cup came to an end in the middle of 2010.

Sadly, Paul reached the end of his life and died at a ripe old age in October 2010.  However, gambling and soccer fans breathed a sigh of relief after the Sea Life aquarium announced that it had already chosen a successor for Psychic Paul, a young, healthy French born squid – also called Paul – who seems to have inherited the same talents.

Place Your Bet on an ABBA Reunion!

Sunday, January 9th, 2011

If rumors are to be believed, the super-group ABBA is planning a reunion this year in the United Kingdom. It has been  many decades that this Swedish pop group disbanded but that does not mean that their popularity has waned. Their songs are among the bestselling hits of all times and new generations of kids grow up knowing the words of all their number one singles such as Mama Mia, Super Trouper, Money Money Money and more.

Based on a passing comment by one of the female band members Agnetha Falkskog to the Guardian newspaper last month that she wouldn’t mind performing with her fellow singers once more in the future, bookmakers and online casinos are offering odds on a reunion this year. Some are taking bets that the group will get together to celebrate the marriage of Prince William and his fiancee Kate Middleton, while others have opened markets on the Glastonbury festival this summer.

“I could see us doing something together in the future,” was what Ms. Falkskog said in the interview. “It is just a feeling I have that it would be fun to get together, talk a bit about the past and maybe perform together.”

“I think we would all consider a one off reunion,” she said.

ABBA fans were so thrilled that Falkskog is even considering this option that they ran to place bets on a possible reunion, either in the spring or the summer of 2011. It should be noted that Agnetha has always been considered the group’s most reclusive member who rarely gives interviews. Since the group’s disbandment in 1982, she has retreated to a remote island after stating that she “overdosed on fame”.

Bookies have also slashed odds from 20/1 to 5/1 that ABBA will see a number one hit this year for one of its songs. The band still manages to sell three or four million albums a year and are hugely popular around the world – from the United States to Japan. Super Trouper was the group’s number last number one hit over 30 years ago, and a decade ago, the four band members turned down a $1 billion offer to reunite.

It’s worth watching bookmaker sites, especially those with a UK angle, as odds continue to be slashed on a potential ABBA reunion.

Mobile Sportsbetting Comes to Las Vegas

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

The fight to legalize and regulate online and mobile gambling in the United States seems to be neverending. As soon as advancement is made in one state, another comes along and passes tougher laws. When progress is made on a state level, steps on a federal level take the issue backwards once more. And so it was refreshing to read this week that the state of Nevada has decided to bring mobile sportsbetting to its residents through the approval of a cool new app.

The Nevada Gaming Commission gave the thumbs up to the Leroy Group for their Leroy App which essentially allows state residents to place sports bets using their mobile phones or devices. Those who use a Blackberry phones will be able to download the app already, while approval for the Android application is still pending.  The Commission agreed to allow the Leroy Grop to market their application after they were convinced that new technology introduced by the company recognized when gamblers were situated within state lines. The approval would not have been given if this was not the case, based on the fact that Nevada gambling laws differ to the laws of other states.  As such, only Nevada residents who are physically within the state borders are allowed – and able – to download the application and wager on their favorite sports.  Other requirements are that the bettor has to be at least 21 years of age and be a registered player with the Leroy Group.

An executive for American Wagering, the group that owns and operates the Leroy Group, said that the approval of the app led to the creation of a new market segment for sports wagering and he was proud to be part of  its creation. “The Nevada regulators placed significant challenges on American Wagering to provide the means of offering account wagering on a mobile device whereby we could verify that the bettor was in the state,” said John English.

Here’s hoping that the advancements made in the Nevada gambling market are a signs for things to come in 2011.

Cyprus Wants to Do Away with Online Gambling

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

If you’ve ever flow into the Mediterranean island state of Cyprus, you will probably have noticed that there is no way to legally gamble there, simply because the government has banned this form of entertainment. This has led to a huge rise in the number of Cypriots who gamble online at offshore sites and enjoy excellent casino games from the comfort of their own homes.

Citing a rise in crime as its main reason, the government is now seeking to ban online gambling outright, and is seeking the permission of the European Commission to do so. Cyprus is a member of the European Union, which means that it signed pacts to say that it would allow cross-border trade and services. If it bans online gambling, it is pushing foreign gambling operators out – thus going against the EU trade pacts.

A few years ago, Portugal was successful in appealing for its right to ban online gambling and Cyprus is hoping that this case has set a precedent and will make the European Commission see that it, too, deserves the right to make its own decisions over internet wagering. The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday and the results can go either way. Those in favor of the ban say that the EC won’t buy ‘crime’ as an excuse to implement a ban. On the other hand, Portugal has been successful in the past, and so it is not impossible that Cyprus will manage to convince the  powers-that-be.

A likely outcome is that the Commission will deny Cyprus’ request, forcing the country to make an appeal against the decision. This could lead to the beginning of a process that could take several years to bear fruit, with the chances of Cyprus being successful a second time around even smaller than the first.

It seems that the only choice that European countries have is to open their doors to foreign online gambling operators,  and at the same time enforce their own strict rules and regulations. This  has been seen done fairly successfully in Spain, France and Italy, and may be the only way for Cyprus to go.

Betfair Casino Gone Rogue?

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

These are the kind of posts I hate to make as I have always done my best to promote casinos that are honest and safe for players to play at.  Unfortunately one of the casinos listed on our site does not appear to be playing by the rules and this is extremely shocking considering this activity is coming from a publically traded company.

Several weeks ago Betfair Casino ran a promotion where they offered players unlimited reload bonuses with only a 10x playthrough requirement.  Here is a copy of the original marketing material:

(Image credit to thelawnet on CasinoMeister)

This promotion unfortunately for the players and Betfair themselves did not go as planned.  Betfair shortly after realized that they were losing a lot of money from this promotion and many players that were winning reported that Betfair started to lock accounts, remove bonuses, and seize funds.  There is even one example of a player who claims that they were paid out approximately 32,000 Euros, only to have this money stolen from his bank account by Betfair a few days later.  Many players have started to come forward and have been submitting their issues via CasinoMeister’s Pitch A Bitch system, but according to the people at CasinoMeister Betfair has been giving the same blanket response:

Thank you for your email which came via CasinoMeister.

I appreciate you may have seen a similar version of the email below, however I have included the details of how to contact the LGA who we are regulated by should you wish to take your complaint further.

On the weekend of the 13/14th November Betfair ran a promotion for its casino product. It subsequently came to our attention that certain customers exploited the spirit of this promotion. The accounts of all customers that took part have been reviewed by Betfair, and corrective action has been taken where appropriate for those who acted in contravention of our terms and conditions. Betfair has corresponded directly with all customers who were affected by this. If any customer would like to discuss the matter further, they may contact the LGA in Malta by e-mailing complaints@lga.org.mt or telephoning +356 21316590.

Kind Regards

Richard

Due to the lack of response from Betfair, CasinoMeister has now placed Betfair on their ROGUE list as of this evening.

It is still unclear what Betfair means by players exploited the bonus which is what requires clarification.  They seem to be hiding behind stating that players did not honour the spirit of the bonus, which is complete garbage.  Anything that they claim the player is violating in the spirit of the bonus should be covered in detail within the Terms and Conditions of the bonus itself.  As far as we can tell so far, it seems that the Betfair customers played by the rules put forth by Betfair themselves which can be viewed here:

(Image credit to thelawnet on CasinoMeister)

I have posted this information on several industry forums requesting for an immediate response from Betfair regarding this situation and will give them 72 hours to provide a reasonable response or show that they are working to resolve this issue.  If no response is received we will remove Betfair from appearing on BestCasinosOnline.org.

If you have been affected by this, please post your story in the comments below.

Graham
