Ken Uston: King of the Blackjack Table

Friday, August 5th, 2011

There have been many people over the years who have grabbed the interest of the gambling public with their remarkable skills in a particular game.  Ken Uston was one of those people, and he has been hailed as one of the most remarkable blackjack players of all times, if not the best in known history.

Uston was a man of superior intelligence, having graduated high stool at the age of 16 and then attending both Yale and Harvard, and majoring in business.  He did extremely well in the world of business, until, in his thirties, he discovered one of the first books to bring the theories and strategies of blackjack to the masses: Edward Thorpe’s Beat the Dealer: A Winning Strategy for the Game of Twenty One.

Uston was absolutely fascinated with the book and studied it frm cover to cover.  Then, using the book as his basis, he developed his own theories and strategies and eventually came to the conclusion that if he wanted to get far in the game, he would need to create a team of talented card counters and hit the tables of Atlantic City and Vegas.

During the 1970′s, Uston and his team of counters visited Las Vegas for the first time and won $27K in just one hour.  Seeing this as a turning point in his life, Uston quit his job and became a professional gambler, with him and his team taking on the biggest stakes in Vegas . The Sands management eventually banned them from the casino after one particularly good session when Uston won $200K, after which time, Uston felt that it was time to move to Atlantic City.

Eventually, he was banned from there too and Uston decided that if he was going to continue with his new job, he’d have to ensure that he was legally able to.  As such, in 1982, he took the casinos to the Supreme Court, which ruled that card counting does not constitute cheating and he could not be legally banned from these establishments.

Nevertheless, the casinos got one up on Uston and his team, by changing the rules of blackjack and making card card counting virtually impossible.  He ended his days as a professional gambler, having won over $1 million in a decade and earning himself a victorious Supreme Court ruling in the process!

Macau Offers the World’s Tallest Bungee Jump

Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

A visit to Macau definitely appears on my list of places-to-see-before-I-die and the more I read about this amazing place, the more I am tempted to hop on a plane and visit right now. Not only is this  Chinese peninsula known as the capital of the Asian gambling world, it is also known for other super tourist attractions – with more in the pipeline as this area expands.

One of the reasons that Macau has been bumped to the top of my list is the fact that I read about Macau Tower this week. Apparently, this is extreme sport paradise at its most extreme!  Macau Tower is not for the faint hearted and anybody who starts to get weak at the knees if they’re anywhere above 2 m should stick to the slot machines on ground zero!

The bungee jump off Macau Tower has been listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the highest bungee jump in the world and the 233 m jump definitely looks impressive from the sidelines! Die hard bungee fans claim that since the rebounds are controlled by a cable guide system, the Macau Tower bungee can’t be considered a true bungee jump. But, if you take into account that the five second free fall is the longest in existence, then it can technically be said that this is the world’s highest bungee jump.

If you’re into going up, rather than down, you may want to opt to climb to the mast of Macau Tower.  You’ll be climbing 100 m from the 61st floor of the building to the 338 m pinnacle of the tower, a climb that should take you around 2 hours. Prerequites are that you come in good physical condition, although you don’t need to have had previous experience in climbing.

After a hard day of climbing up or jumping down the tower, what could be better than hitting the casino floors, getting in a couple of hours of great gambling action at the blackjack tables or slot machines. Macau rivals no other place – not even Vegas – for its 24/7 gambling action and non-stop entertainment… see you there some day!

All Time Favorite Online Casino Games

Sunday, January 16th, 2011

Whenever I visit an online casino site, I feel like I’m a kid let loose in a candy store. There really is no better feeling than knowing that I can play any one of the literally hundreds of games that are offered by the site. Of course, that choice can become a bit overwhelming, considering that I don’t have an unlimited bankroll or a rich uncle somewhere sponsoring my casino habits. But, on the other hand, it’s good to know that if I felt like playing that new obscure sounding arcade game, I could do so within seconds.  Nevertheless, I keep returning to my old favourites at those top online gambling sites, simply because I know that they will provide me with excellent entertainment and great payouts.

Recently, I ran an informal poll with several of my gambling buddies to find out which were their all time favorite online casino games, and we came up with this list, in no particular order of popularity.

Slots

With the hundreds of different slot games available in the industry, and with new titles being added all the time, it comes as no surprise that slots were an overwhelming favorite among those polled. Slots come in all shapes and sizes, from classic three reel games to multi reel video slot games. You’ll find awesome graphics and animations, themes of every single kind, amazing payouts and huge jackpots that could earn you life-changing sums of cash. With all that going for them, slots are definitely number one when it comes to online gambling entertainment.

Video Poker

With their excellent odds, and the fact that they were created from two hugely popular gambling games – slots and poker – video poker machines are also hugely sought-after at online casinos. These games come in different variants and you can play up to 100 hands simultaneously, making for a super gambling pastime.

Blackjack

Learn the basic strategy, and you can improve your odds at this classic card game significantly. Players love blackjack for its skill factor, its almost instant payouts and the fact that it’s just them against the dealer.

Keno

Players seeking out instant gambling gratification, with absolutely zero skill element and the chance to win fast, usually head to the keno boards at online casinos to check out the action. This lottery-game variant has a huge following and it’s easy to see why.

Roulette

What other game represents the timeless elegance of casino gaming than roulette? The table game made a sensational crossover to the world of online gambling, and is also hugely popular.

The Best Blackjack Jokes

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Nothing quite beats the excitement of the blackjack table on any given casino floor. Players may be sitting quietly studying their cards, murmuring politely to the dealer or pondering their next move. But behind that peaceful facade is an almost tangible electricity as players try to beat the dealer with a better hand.  To lighten the mood a little around the blackjack table, here are a couple of the best jokes we’ve heard about this game that is so popular among online gambling players and land casino fans alike.

A Little Bit of Blackjack Lovin’

It’s 4 am and John and Rob roll out of the casino after a dramatic night around the blackjack table. John turns to his friend and says: “That was great! Now comes the bad part of the evening. I’m going to get home, try to be as quiet as possible and creep into bed. But the same thing happens each time – my wife is lying awake with the lights on, ready to screech ‘Where the &*#^ have you been??”  Rob smiles and says: “I had that problem too, until I came up with the best solution.”  “Please share,” says a desperate John. Rob says: “When I get home, I honk the horn, slam the door, turn on all the lights and jump onto the bed, yelling: “Hey honey, how ’bout a little bit of lovin’ for me?” The little lady lies as still as a mouse and pretends to be fast asleep!”

Blackjack Bonanza

A man comes running into his house, yelling at his wife: “Honey, honey. You’ll never believe what happened? I won a million dollars playing blackjack! Pack your bags.”

His thrilled wife can hardly contain her excitement and says: “Darling, that’s wonderful! What should I pack?  Are we going on a cruise to the Antarctic or a summer vacation to the Caribbean? Should I pack for hot or cold weather?”

Her husband replies: “Doesn’t matter, honey. As long as you’re out my house by midnight tonight!”

Learn How to Increase Your Chances of Winning the Lottery

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

The biggest jackpot in UK history was finally claimed this week, when someone stepped forward with the winning ticket to the EuroMillions lottery draw and took home a staggering GBP 113 million! The rest of us can now pull our tongues off the floor and go back to our normal flesh color after turning a sorry shade of green, and in the meantime, dream about the next big win.  There is something to be said for buying lottery tickets. While casino games such as slots and poker provide almost instant gratification and entertainment, somehow waiting for the lottery numbers to be announced draws out the pleasure somewhat and allows you a few days to dream that maybe, just maybe, next time it’ll be you holding that massive check.

One guy, however, decided to stop with the dreaming and start with the doing. Richard Lustig has written a book called Learn How to Increase your Chances of Winning the Lotteryand he is walking proof that his strategy works. Lustig has won the lottery an incredible seven times, the highest sum being $842,000! Lustig said that he spent most of time losing the lottery until he decided that there has to be a method that works. As such, he sat down and devised a method that he claims will bring relative success.

Lustig doesn’t guarantee that that by following his method, all his readers will win the lottery. He is promising, however, that they will increase their chances of winning. The system was developed over a few years and was initially written out as a report. After Lustig sold thousands of copies of this report, he turned his method into a book and the success was remarkable. Learn How to Increase Your Chances of Winning the Lottery now sits at number three on Amazon’s list of self-help books, and more people than ever are picking up the book in the hope of becoming a big winner.

Lustig himself is a gambler by nature and loves his regular games of blackjack. He has spent some of his winnings spoiling himself, such as a Harley Davidson and a Jaguar. Seems like this guy knows what he’s talking about!

What Not to Say in the Casino!

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

I’m sure you’ve heard of casino etiquette, those unwritten rules that dictate how to act (and how not to act!) when you walk into a casino. On  your average casino floor there are crowds of people jostling to get in on the casino game action, many of them with hundreds of dollars at stake. The last thing they’ll want to hear is some smart alec (in this case – you!) make a dumb comment or ask a stupid question. I’ve compiled a list of comments that I think are probably worth keeping to yourself when you walk through those casino doors:

You to the blackjack dealer: Do you know any good card tricks?

You to the casino cashier: Can I have change for the condom machine, please?

You to the croupier: Can I use my lucky dice to play craps?

You to the dealer: What are the odds on strip poker?

You to the roulette dealer: Was the French roulette wheel imported from France?

You to your fellow player: Can you break a five for me?

You to the pitboss: The dealer has a poker face!

You to the cashier when he asks which denomination you prefer: Episcopalian

You to the casino security guard: Here’s a tenner.

Other things you should avoid doing at all costs at the casino:

Avoid winking at the dealer (especially of the same sex!)

Don’t try to buy poker chips using Monopoly money.

Don’t whip out your blackjack rule book after the dealer tells you patiently that you cannot split for the tenth time.

So what SHOULD you do?

I’ve spent the last few minutes writing about what you shouldn’t do be doing or saying at the casino, but here are some things that are considered good etiquette (seriously now!)

Ask if you can sit down at a table, even if there is an empty chair. The player next to you may be playing an extra hand.

Keep your emotions under control. Avoid angry outburts, yells of joy or – even worse – curse words. Remember, you’re in a public place!

In the same vein, don’t blame the dealer for your losses.
