BACCARAT
Baccarat is a casino card game similar to the games of faro
and basset. Within the broad term of Baccarat there are three
well known variants that are played around the world. Baccarat
banque, Baccarat chemin de fer, and punto banco (also called
North American Baccarat) are the generally accepted names for
these three variations on the main game. The variant punto banco
requires no skill from the players of the game since the cards
they are dealt dictate the operation of the game and what they
must do.
Unlike this version, both chemin de fer and Baccarat banque rely
on the choices each player makes in order to gain a strategic
advantage, as well as the cards they are dealt, mixing elements
of both skill and chance. For each variant there are three
important terms required for players to know that describe each
of three possible outcomes for the end of the game. These terms
are player, tie and banker.

General Information and History of Baccarat
Baccarat is thought to have its origins in Italy. It was introduced to France and much of Great Britain sometime during the reign of Charles VIII of France, who ruled during the years of 1483-1498. This means that Baccarat, in one form or another, is possibly one of the oldest casino games around today. Baccarat is certainly much older than other card games like Texas Holdem by hundreds of years since conception. The word Baccarat mean zero in both Italian and French, making the history of Baccarat a little more murky and dubious since both countries want to claim it as their own game and take credit for inventing it.
However, as stated before, there are plausible back stories and generally accepted explanations for the overall history of the game. One popular theory is that an Italian merchant and gambler by the name of Felix Falguierein invented the game during the Middle Ages using a deck of what are now known as tarot cards. The game is said to have been based on an Etruscan ritual of the nine gods and the blonde virgin. In this ritual, the nine gods would pray to the virgin while standing on the tips of their toes until she threw a nine sided die. There are obvious connections to mysticism and numerology in this myth. Depending on what number the die landed on, 1-9, different things would happen to the blonde virgin. If she rolled a 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 she must walk into the sea. If she rolled a 6 or 7, she would be banned from participating in further religious activity. If she rolled an 8 or 9, she would then become a priestess. This was a drama heightened by the probability of die rolls that result in drastically differing outcomes, similar in a way to modern gambling.
Baccarat was, at first, a game generally enjoyed only by the gentry and nobility of Italy and France. As time went on, it gained popularity among a variety of social groups. Indeed, as with many games that have been around for hundreds of years, as the game was spread through expansion of the empires of respective countries, exploration and immigration, the different variations started to emerge. Local customs and social practices indigenous to particular places exerted influence on the way it was played. One example of this is the development of chemin de fer, which is thought to have been originated in France but enjoyed its widest popularity in England. It was often called by the name of European Baccarat. This new European Baccarat resembled chemin de fer in many ways but did have some slight rule variations from the initial game.
In the 1950's, a man named Tommy Renzoni helped popularize a combination of chemin de fer's original rules and the new rules of European Baccarat in the United States. Since its initial play in the Dunes casino, American Baccarat has gained the most popularity worldwide, though other variations are still played in many countries.
Baccarat Rules
In Baccarat, the numbered cards 2-9 are each worth the value
already designated to them. 10's as well as Jacks, Queens and
Kings are worth zero and Aces take the place of 1 point. The
number 9 is significant in that your total points cannot exceed
9. This applies to a player who adds the sum of all their cards
and may get a score of 13, for example. In this case, with any
double digit number the tens place is ignored, meaning the 1 in
front of the 3 is taken away from the score. This leaves the
score to be a simple 3, fitting within the bounds of the scale
of 9.
Thus, the highest score you can achieve in this game is 9 and
the lowest is 0, for which the game is named. It is the only
card game named for its worst hand, making it somewhat unique.
You must know the designations of the terms player and banker,
as mentioned above. These merely denote the hands being dealt.
One hand represents the player and one hand represents the
banker. This does not mean that there are literal players and
bankers managing these cards but are just terms used instead of
hand 1 and hand 2.
Both hands are dealt two face-down cards. Next, the hands are
turned over, revealing their respective values by addition. An
example of this would be the player hand totalling 3 and the
banker hand totalling 7. From here, either one additional card
is drawn for either the player or banker or they will stand pat.
This is not determined by the actual players of the game but by
a set of protocols. For instance, if the player hand is between
0-5, the banker draws a card. Players bet on each hand and,
depending on the totals of each, they win or lose the bet.
Baccarat Tips and Strategy
Being a good Baccarat player is much like being good at
similar games like Blackjack. Knowing which hand to bet on can
be difficult for new players. A general rule is to bet
moderately and be conservative with your point totals. By
anticipating hands that may go over the 9 point limit and become
very bad point totals, players will gain the foresight necessary
to become better at the game.
Additionally, it should be noted that although there is some
skill to determining which hand to bet on, there is a huge
portion of luck involved in the game and even experienced
Baccarat players can have bad nights where losing streaks occur
due to random chance and probability.
